The Maasen Law Firm, which specializes in DUI cases, is offering a Keychain Breathalyzer for $10 on its website, and the firm claims it “immediately indicates a drinker’s level of intoxication.”
“A green light signals alcohol level under 0.02 percent; yellow light for over 0.02 percent; and red for over 0.05 percent,” a press release says.
“I use it,” said Scott Maasen, an attorney. “Friends and clients use it. It is a great tool,” he said.
Maasen said he is hoping people use the device as a preventative tool that makes them aware of their limits. “Blow before you go,” he said.
Sgt. Steve Carbajal, a Tempe police officer, told ABC15 he is a little skeptical.
“I would say a lot of them are novelty items,” he said. “I would question the reliability of some of these devices that you can purchase at the store.”
“Obviously, it’s not to the level of equipment that we use to measure blood alcohol concentration during our investigations,” he added.
Carbajal said the best way to avoid getting busted for drinking and driving is to designate a driver that has not been drinking.
