The fellowships were created by the Law School to allow students additional opportunities to gain practical experience before graduation, ease financial stresses, and offer needed assistance to organizations providing legal services to underserved constituencies.
Fellowship recipients, who will hold public interest jobs during the summer of 2009, were selected by a committee made up of Wayne Law faculty and alumni.
The Wayne State University Law School is part of Wayne State University. It has educated and trained lawyers since 1927, and its over 10,000 alumni serve as successful leaders of the bench and bar. Alumni include six of the last 10 presidents of the State Bar of Michigan; members of Congress; the former national president of the Federal Bar Association; and a quarter of all sitting judges in the Michigan judiciary.
