We have some fresh news out of Cairo, from DLA Matouk Bassiouny. First the good news – everyone is safe and in good health. The Cairo office is open again with limited hours and will return to normal hours once the curfew has been lifted.
They have also passed on a few other bits of information:
– While central Cairo remains the focal point of the Government opposition’s sustained protest campaign, well-attended gatherings have taken place in recent days in a number of other cities in Egypt.
– The level of violence has reduced considerably over the last 24-48 hours but the situation remains fluid and renewed violence between rival political factions is possible.
– Internet and mobile telephone networks are now functional although some problems remain with landlines and text messages which are subject to periodic disruption.
– Many bank branches have resumed activity from 10.00 to 13.30 local time and many shops and businesses have reopened for the first time since the protests gained intensity.
– The stock exchange will not reopen on 7 February as previously announced.
