Katie Holmes filed a $50 million suit against Star Magazine last Tuesday, March 1, for defamation. The cover of the January edition of the magazine had a headline that read “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE – Katie DRUG SHOCKER – The real reason she can’t leave Tom”.
The article did not make the actual claim that Holmes used drugs, but that she was addicted to the treatment given her in Scientology using a device called an “e-meter”. The device is used in Scientology auditing, and is said to have mood elevating effects. Believers in Scientology believe that mental trauma can be detected by the e-meter.
According to the lawsuit, “[Katie] has no intention of leaving her husband Tom Cruise, and is not prevented from doing so by any drug addiction.” Her attorney said “Star Magazine’s malicious claims about Katie are untrue, unethical, and unlawful.”
The publishers of Star Magazine also put out a statement that said “Star fully stands behind the editorial integrity of what we have published concerning Ms. Holmes’ controversial use of the Scientology ‘e-meter’.” The magazine plans on strongly defending the suit filed by Holmes.
Holmes had her own statement to give to the media. She said “Of all the fabricated stories that continue to be published about me, this instance is beyond the pale.” Time will tell which side comes out the winner in this fierce battle.
