There is currently overcrowding in California state prisons and a supreme court ruling has seen this as a violation of prisoners rights of health and dignity. Figures in the article state that the current California state population is about 156,000 and plans have been made to reduce that number by 40,000 inmates. According to the article, other violations were raised in the ruling including the treatment of mentally ill inmates. 9000 offenders have now been released.
