Groupon, an online daily deals site has been sued for engaging “bait-and-switch advertising” practices by a San Francisco tour operator for purchasing tour-related keywords in Google’s AdWords service. The tour operator says that when customers click on the links to Groupon no tour-related coupons are available and also drives up the cost of purchasing keywords for their company. This also pushes down their page placements in Google search. This type of advertising which prohibits businesses from advertising an offer or product with no intention of honoring the offer or selling the product at that price is illegal in most of the states.
