Every time I make soup, I somehow get the phrase “No soup for you!” stuck in my head. I have never even watched an entire episode of Seinfeld before! Why??? I have no idea. I do find the concept of a Soup Nazi rather hilarious, although using the phrase Nazi actually makes no sense when it comes to denying soup… I’ll avoid a historical analysis though, you all have lives to get back to.
Yesterday morning I packed up (yes, I waited until an hour before I had to leave to pack) and headed to the airport. The Kansas City airport is set up in such a way that when my dad dropped me at the curb, I was directly in front of my gate. You go through security for an area with about 6 gates. This makes things super easy and fast for those of us who live here… not so convenient for people flying through. Too bad for you! Haha. Anyway, I arrived and thought I had plenty of time, until I saw the security line.
Then I started walking towards the back of the line… and couldn’t see it.
Kept walking. Still couldn’t see it.
My jaw was practically on the floor. I had never seen such a long line in the KC airport before! Here’s me at the back. You can’t even see security because it’s around the curve to the left. Ridiculous.
Luckily, it moved pretty quickly and I made it to my gate with plenty of time. A couple of amusing things along the way. First, I got “body scanned” at security. Honestly, I think everyone’s negative reaction to it was just a bit much. Personally I find it kind of fun to stand in that thing… I feel special to have been chosen. Concerned? Nope.
Also, news stations were at the airport. And yes, I said stations. Not one, but two. Why were they there? I have NO IDEA. I did, however, enjoy that they filmed us going through security. Because it was thrilling. Clearly we have a lot of important news happenings in KCMO.
After I made it home, I decided that I wanted to finally try out Chelsey’s Cabbage Lentil Soup. It looked so easy and simple and I knew when I first saw it that I would have to give it a try.
First, I added a little olive oil and garlic. I didn’t have onion, so that’s the only thing I omitted from Chelsey’s recipe. Oh and the basil, no basil.
Then, I added my chopped carrots and celery and let it cook for a couple minutes.
Next came the lentils, broth, water and cabbage. I had red (pink??) lentils instead of green.
I let it simmer for 30 minutes, and voila! It smelled soooooo good!
I put it in 4 containers for lunches and dinners throughout the week and since her recipe makes about 8 servings (cups), these will be some hearty lunches.
I also HAD to have a taste before putting it all away:
I absolutely love cabbage soup. It’s so simple, yet someone cooked cabbage is one of my favorite things. The lentils, well, not so sure about them. They kind of tasted like mini dry beans. Maybe I didn’t cook them correctly? Not sure. They weren’t bad, just weird to me.
Also, for those of you who read last week and have been sitting on the edges of your chairs to hear about Molly’s stay at the Pooch Hotel, she is home and doing well. Apparently she was a little “off” when they picked her up yesterday. I think she was traumatized. Luckily, she was back to her normal self when I went by to visit her today. I was afraid she would hate me for leaving her there… But thank goodness puppies don’t hold grudges.
Have you ever had a horrible airport experience? I’ve sure had my fair share… but mostly good!
What’s your favorite kind of soup, or simple food?
