The most dangerous city in all of America with 75,000 people or more is that of Flint, Michigan according to the most recent statistics provided by CQ Press.
The date comes from the 2010 FBI Uniform Crime Report, which helps to set the rankings by CQ. The CQ Press used the data on violent crimes including murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault as well as property crimes such as larceny-theft, burglary, arson and motor vehicle theft. Based on those same statistics, the CQ Press also ranked the safest cities to live in the United States. Those rankings are towards the end of this article.
The city of Flint has the highest number of aggravated assaults of all of the cities that were ranked by CQ Press. The city of Flint also endures the second highest murder rate of the cities ranked by CQ Press.
The second city on the list is that of Camden, New Jersey. Camden is in the midst of major police cuts because of budget woes. A resident of the city told the Philadelphia Daily News, “We don’t have any real policing in Camden,” Vega, 50, said. “They’re just out here to pick up the bodies.”
Detroit, Michigan is the third city on the list. The city has the third highest rate of violent crime in the United States, with 1,111 violent crimes occurring per 100,000 residents.
The fourth city on the list is that of St. Louis, which has seen its major crimes decline recently, according to the city’s authorities. Authorities went on to say that burglary rates and homicide rates continue to remain high in the city.
The fifth city on the list is Oakland, California. The violent crime numbers in Oakland are three times higher than the country’s average.
Fishers, Indiana is ranked number one by CQ Press as the safest place to live in America. In 2010, it was ranked by CNN Money as the eighth best place out of 100 to live in America. The city has a low unemployment rate, which sits just above six percent, and has cheap housing. The city’s rate of violent crime is also low. There were no murders in 2010 and only four aggravated assaults.
The second safest city to live in per CQ Press is that of O’Fallon Missouri. O’Fallon hit the CNN Money list at number 26. The suburb of St. Louis has a low unemployment rate and also 400 acres of parks to go along with a low crime rate.
The warm weather, the golf courses, and the low crime put Mission Viejo, California at number three on the list of safest cities. The median home price is $440,000 in in Mission Viejo, according to US News.
Ramapo, New York came in at number four on the safest cities to live list. Ramapo is located 45 minutes from New York City but has a beautiful golf course, an equestrian center, and a new sports complex.
Newton, Massachusetts comes in at number five on the safest cities to live list. This town has been described as close to being perfect, except for its high cost of living outside of Boston.
