A California tween installed a camera to provide surveillance of her bedroom. Little did she know that it was not just her little sisters who were stealing from her. She was able to catch a real burglar on camera.
Hallie Pritchard, 12, provided footage taken by her webcam during an open house shows one visitor who left the tour to take jewelry from the family.
“I had it under a bunch of pillows,” she said. “You could see my whole room.”
Pritchard informed her parents immediately when she watched the video and saw the intruder in her room. Authorities were able to identify the intruder as Douglas John Calandrella not long after they saw the video. The reason they easily identified him was that he was arrested by police two years prior for the same thing. Calandrella is a former real estate agent himself.
The first time Calandrella committed this crime, he stole keys from lock boxes to take over 50 items from homes. He then posted the items on eBay almost immediately after the theft.
During this crime, Calandrella is accused of stealing a diamond necklace and a bracelet from Pritchard’s drawers. Calandrella was still on probation for the previous crime so he is now being held without bail.
