On Monday’s ‘Daily Show,’ Jon Stewart got riled up because of something that Newt Gingrich said in last Thursday’s debate in South Carolina. The video in this post really takes the cake in an election year that has seen some interesting moments so far.
The debate began as CNN moderator John King asked Gingrich about the accusations from his second wife saying that he wanted an open marriage. Gingrich responded to the question by attacking the moderator himself. Gingrich responded by saying that a moderator asking a presidential candidate about these matters was “as close to despicable as anything [he] can imagine.” You can watch the Gingrich attack on King at the bottom of the post.
“I think you’ve got a pretty good imagination, ‘despicability’ wise,” Stewart said when referencing Gingrich’s track record of leaving wives who are sick. Stewart was annoyed at the response of Gingrich and the fact that King did not call him out on the response. Stewart explained:
“All [King] has to do is point out the hypocrisy of a family values crusader who presided over Congress at the time of the Republicans’ ‘Clinton penis scavenger hunt’ suddenly finding that kind of questioning of a Presidential candidate unseemly! Point out that [Gingrich] insists that gay people would sully the sanctity of marriage — whilst being a career marriage sully-er!”
The segment of the show when Stewart went off about Gingrich was titled “How The Newt Gingrich Stole South Carolina.” Stewart was also peeved with the fact that Gingrich called himself an outsider in Washington even though he is the former Speaker of the House and Freddie Mac consultant and a wealthy resident of D.C.
“When Washington gets its prostate checked, it tickles you!” Stewart joked.
