Breyer, 73, was with some guests and his wife Joanna on Thursday evening, when at about 9 p.m., the incident took place. Though no one suffered any injuries, the robber left with around $1000 in cash. Breyer owns a vacation home on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, where the robbery happened.
The Supreme Court Police and the local authorities are assisted by U.S. Marshals as informed by Marshals Service spokesman Jeff Carter. No arrests have yet been made.
The vacation home owned by Justice Breyer has an estimated value between $100, 000 and $ 250, 000.
The justices will attend a closed-door meeting on Friday after returning from their month-long recess.
Usually, security of justices is very tight and the last two incidents of crime involving a justice occurred during 2004 and 1996, respectively.
In 2004, Justice David Souter was attacked by a group of young men while he was jogging in Washington. In 1996, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s purse was snatched while on a walk with her family in Washington.
This is the first time a justice has been robbed in his own home within this decade. After the closed-door meeting, the justices would meet in public on February 21.
