Maryland House Legalizes Gay Marriage

The never ending debate about same-sex rights, has taken another turn, with a slender victory for the proponents of same sex-marriages, when the Maryland House voted in their favor. Considering that a similar debate failed last year, the victory drew loud applause with lots of back thumping and hugs.

However, their joy may be short-lived, as it becoming law is subject to voters mandate in November, later this year. The Republican minority leader Anthony O’Donnell accepted that the celebrations at this juncture were premature and commented, that they were “beginning a process, not ending a process. The citizens of Maryland will have the final say.”

If the bill is indeed passed, it would make Maryland the eighth state in the US, along with Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and the Washington Capitol district that allow same-sex couples to marry.

Whether same sex marriages should be endorsed and legally recognized is both a religious and political subject. Its opponents believe that marriage is a sacred union between man and woman. It is the way God intended it to be and has its roots in the Ten Commandments.

Most Christians see marriage as the will of God – that it is His gift and a sacred institution, that must not be defiled, by allowing same-sex marriages, which is something that politicians do to suit and fit their personal political agendas and not because they believe in it. Even President Obama is non-committal when he admits, that he supports the idea of legalizing same-sex marriages, although at a personal level his beliefs place him in opposition to it.

However, proponents of the same-sex rights theory, believe that everybody has the right to the quest of happiness and if a man marrying a man or a woman marrying a woman makes them happy, what does God have to do with it? Moreover, they argue, if two people love one another and want to unite and share their destinies, it is cause to be feted and celebrated. Call it “marriage”, “living together” or anything you want, it does not matter. Same sex-unions hurts no one – you can support it or oppose it. It is matter of personal belief and choice and no individual has the right to interfere or meddle in personal affairs.

If you were to go strictly by God’s word, He says in Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful and increase in number” – wonder how the same-sex couples are going to do that.
