The prostitute in question gave detailed testimony of the incident, after investigators began probing Gristina’s operation in 2008.
“Most of the women don’t have any idea about the identities of the men they sleep with,” said one source. “How would you know a money man from Wall street or a face of a lawyer or banker who shows up?”
“But the face of the national politician? She knew.”
Edwards’s lawyer, Allison Van Laningham, has vehemently denied the allegations, saying, “Mr. Edwards categorically denies that he was involved with any prostitute or service. These allegations are false, defamatory, and he puts those who would publish or repeat them on notice that they are acting with actual malice by reporting or repeating them. He has demanded a complete retraction from the only source being quoted.”
No retractions have been made, and DNAinfo is sticking to their story. Nor can Edwards readily convince the world the allegations are false, even if they are, given his track record. When the National Enquirer relayed the story in 2007 that Edwards had fathered a love child with mistress Rielle Hunter, while his wife, meanwhile was struggling against cancer, Edwards also spoke categorically: “The story is false. It’s completely untrue, ridiculous.” Now he is on trial for misappropriating funds to cover up that very story which was in fact all too true. Edwards is discovering that it is hard to clear your name when your word cannot be trusted.
