Ryan Leaf, once the number 2 NFL draft pick just behind Manning, has been arrested Monday for the second time in four days for burglarizing and illegally possessing pain pills.
“It’s a pretty sad deal,” said Kenneth Olson, his attorney. “Obviously, its’ a product of Ryan’s addictive behavior.”
Leaf was first arrested for robbing the home of a fellow player in 2008, when investigations turned up about 1,000 pain pills obtained from local pharmacies. He pleaded guilty to all 8 of his felony charges and was put on a 10 year probation. Friday, he was arrested in Great Falls, Mont., for burglarizing and for possession of drugs. After being freed on $76,000 bail, he was at it again Sunday, when a home-owner reported that he returned home to discover a “tall man with an athletic build,” who claimed he had come to the wrong address, and who then left. That homeowner later discovered his pain-pills had were missing, and subsequently picked Leaf out of a line-up.
GPS records confirm Leaf’s truck had been at the residence: “The navigation system shows that he was in that driveway yesterday afternoon during the time from of the burglary,” said Central Montana Drug Task Force commander Chris Hickman. Furthermore, 89 hydrocodone pills were found loose in the pocket of a bathrobe found at Leaf’s residence, though police believe that these were taken from yet another source.
Randall County District Attorney James Farren is seeking a hearing to extradite Leaf back to Montana. “Our argument will be that he should go to prison” for violating the terms of his probation, said Farren.
