Saudi Arabia Bans Gays and Lesbians from School

A law that bans gays and ‘tom boys,’ lesbians, from attending schools and universities is being enforced by the Saudi Arabian government. The country has stated that they have to change their appearance and their behavior. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has been told to adopt high-level enforcement when it comes to the ban of homosexuals and females who tend to appear with a male look when at school.

The announcement was reported by the Arabic-language news agency, Al Sharq, and it reads as follows:

“Instructions have been issued to all public schools and universities to ban the entry of gays and tom boys and to intensify their efforts to fight this phenomenon, which has been promoted by some websites.”

The instructions were not accompanied with information as to who issued the instructions. The instructions ban children and teens from appearing in school unless they change their behavior and stop homosexual practices in public places. Corporal and capital punishment can be used against those who are homosexual in Saudi Arabia, according to Shariah or Islamic Law. A law preventing the hiring of lesbians and gays in the work place was put in place by the Saudi government two years ago.
