A fugitive from Mississippi, Adam Mayes, was found dead Thursday night from a self-inflicted wound from a gunshot. Mayes was accused of a double-homicide and kidnapping. The two girls he kidnapped were found safe, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Department. Mayes was 35 and he shot himself in the head as SWAT members approached him close to his Alpine home just near 9 p.m. Authorities confirmed that Mayes was dead after they lost his pulse twice and then revived him.

“The girls were found alive and appear to be unharmed,” Daniel McMullen an FBI special agent in charge for the state of Mississippi, said. “Officers also apprehended top-10 fugitive Adam Mayes. Preliminary reports indicate Mayes shot himself in the head and was later pronounced dead in an area hospital.”

Mayes was put into an officer’s patrol car and then put into an ambulance.

“After he was shot they took him to Mount Zion Church,” Amanda Roberson, a witness, said. “They pulled his body from a police cruiser and put him in an ambulance. I overheard paramedics say he lost his pulse twice.”

The two girls Mayes abducted, Alexandria Bain and Kyliyah Bain, were found alive and safe. Alexandria is 12 and Kyliyah is 8. Mayes and his wife, Teresa, were charged with first-degree murder early in the week. They were charged with murder in the deaths of Jo Ann Bain and her 14-year-old daughter Adrienne. The bodies of the two women were found by authorities buried in the backyard of Mayes’ home not long after Jo Ann’s husband reported her missing.
