The list of legal action against the law firm of Dewey & LeBoeuf continues to grow. Added to the list now is an eviction notice filed earlier this week in Washington, D.C. by the firm’s landlord. The landlord claims that the firm owes $550,000 in rent that was not paid between February 1 and May 12. The complete amount of money owed to the landlord is $927,000 when you factor in $26,000 in late fees, utility charges, taxes and legal costs.
Recently, the law firm has been sued by multiple employees and this includes associates who claim that the notice for mass layoffs came after only one week of notice, which does not follow federal laws requiring longer warning periods. Dewey was sued in Manhattan federal court by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. in order to terminate the existing retirement plans, acquire the books and records and get a court-appointed trustee to watch over the issues.
There are 1,776 lawyers and staff members eligible for pensions are entitled to $56,000 per year beginning at the age of 65. Even though a spokesperson for the firm has said that ‘it is not formally closed,’ it appears that the firm is coming to its demise. Hundreds of partners have left the firm to join others or begin their own and multiple offices in the United States and across the globe have shut their doors for good.
