The government in Thailand has expressed its anger at a tweet by Lady Gaga in which she tells about purchasing a fake Rolex watch in the street markets of Bangkok. While the markets and stalls at Bangkok are famous for selling near-perfect replicas of famous luxury brands, such goods are usually imported from China. However, Lady Gaga’s tweet on May 23, days before her concert in Bangkok upset some loyal citizens of Thailand who have suggested that Gaga is damaging the reputation of Thailand by spreading the word of fake Rolex watches available in Bangkok.
Recently, Gaga faced protests in Korea and had to cancel her concert in Indonesia stands by her tweet while the Commerce Ministry of Thailand accuses that she is trying to undermine the government’s efforts to eradicate piracy.
Giving Lady Gaga, para-ambassador status with the U.S. government being totally clueless about it, Reuters reported of an official from the Intellectual Property Department of the government of Thailand saying “Lady Gaga is a representative of the U.S. and the U.S. puts pressure on smaller countries to promote the protection of intellectual property.”
“She should tell her fans that they shouldn’t use fake goods” added the Thai intellectual.
Thai forums on the internet and social media is already abuzz with Gaga’s comment on the easy availability of fake Rolex in Bangkok, and a protest rally was organized in Bangkok’s business district. However, her concert on Friday brought 50,000 fans.
Gaga told her 24 million followers on Twitter, just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy a fake rolex.”
People are saying she got mixed up and was referring to the Ladies’ Market in Hong Kong.
