In an unthinkable crime completely inappropriate for the circumstances, Fred Willard – fun time comedian from “Best in Show,” “Anchorman,” and “American Wedding” – totally disregarded the intellectual content of the triple XXX feature he was enjoying (“Step Dad 2” was one of the movies showing at that theater) reducing it to something sexual. Or else he had his erect member in his hand for some other reason. The LAPD undercover vice squad pretty much took the situation at face value when they booked the hapless film star.
What one is supposed to do at an adult cinema is unclear – but evidently that is out completely, and though the movie house, called the Tiki Theatre, warns its movies goers that it is “viewed by LAPD” – law mandates that cops can initiate “random walk throughs” on such venues in Hollywood at their discretion – the theater only warns against “No Alcohol, No weapons, No smoking inside” and no pets. Well how’s a guy to know?
TMZ’s coverage of the story mentions that it has been rumored Willard is in pre-production for an upcoming comedy entitled “The Yank,” but there may be no direct connection between that and Wednesday’s mishap.
Willard, 78, was caught with his pants down, but he was processed by the cops quickly enough. Paul Reubens, who played Pee Wee Herman had suffered a similar misunderstanding in 1991, which cost him his career – but considering Willard’s target audience and brand of comedy, this might in fact enhance his career.
Nevertheless, Willard’s attorney, Paul Takakjian, is taking it hard, saying “With all do respect to the individual officer, our belief is that Fred did nothing in any violation of any law. We will be working vigorously to clear his name in this matter.” He did not mention that Willard’s working vigorously was what got him in this mess to begin with.
Hold on there, Willard! I suppose every man is likewise shamed sometime in their life, (but usually not after the age 15).
