Mariah Carey Signs on as New “American Idol” Judge — for $18 Million

Steve Tyler left to focus on his band, Aerosmith, creating a vacancy in America Idol’s team of celebrity judges — till now. What would make Jennifer Lopez, Ellen DeGeneres, or Paula Abdul relevant judges to vocal criticism has been one of the show’s shortcomings, and it is hoped that the new judge, who is known for her vocal talent, will be able to also offer come unique criticism on the topic. But to gain Mariah Carey’s participation, American Idol has made her the highest paid judge ever to be featured on reality television, with an $18 million contract for a one-year appearance.

Jennifer Lopez signed up for $12 million, and Brittney Spears for $15 million on “X factor,” so Mariah has bested the best.

“Its gonna be so much fun working on American idol. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM! — MC.”

Despite the lack of vocal distinction among the judges — although Steve Tyler, with his unmistakable style of crooning, regularly works with vocal trainers — the show has made astronomical rating and produced a series of stars, including Kelly Clarkson, Christ Daughtry, Fantasia, Adam Lambart, Carrie Underwood, and Jennifer Hudson.

It is hope that Mariah lives up to her paycheck and delivers a stellar season. With what success she’s had on album sales — she is just behind the Beatles with number one hits — perhaps her talents will transfer to the new medium? Or, more importantly for the show, her personality should add an interesting voice to talent criticism.
