Stetson Law Offering New Concentration for Students

According to a press release, Stetson University College of Law is going to offer a Social Justice Advocacy Certificate of Concentration program for its students. The program will teach students how to handle social justice issues in criminal and civil law. The program will be selective, admitting only a limited number of students. Those students will be chosen based on their experiential and academic backgrounds, commitment to a career that will be dedicated to serving the cause of social justice and interviews with faculty members.

The program will be led by professors Robert Bickel and Judith Scully. Scully works as a faculty adviser for the Innocence Initiative at Stetson and the Juvenile Justice Initiative. Bickel has been teaching at the law school for quite some time. For the previous seven years he has taught a Constitutional Law and the Civil Rights Movement course. Funding for the course taught by Bickel has been provided by the law firm of Florin and Roebig. The course permits students to travel each summer to six cities in the south. The students go to institutes, museums, sites and veterans of the Civil Rights Movements.

The funding comes from that law firm because the named partners are graduates of the school. Thomas D. Roebig Jr. JD 1986 and Wil H. Florin JD 1980 had the following to say: “Social justice is part of employment law. We deal with clients with discrimination complaints at the law firm on a daily basis.”
