A new recall was announced earlier this week and it is for a very popular baby product; the Bumbo Baby Seat. Four million seats have been recalled since two dozen reports have been made about infants fracturing their skulls. Babies can wiggle out of the seats, which are supposed to be placed on the floor, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Back in October of 2007, roughly 1 million of the seats were recalled because they needed to have additional warning labels attached to them. Those warning labels had to have information printed on them about not putting the seats on raised areas. Those raised areas include counters, tables and chairs.
Since 2007, the first recall of the seats, the Bumbo International of South Africa and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have been informed of at least 50 incidents involving children falling from the Bumbo seats after being placed on raised areas. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that 34 babies were reported to have fallen from the seats while on flat surfaces. Since the initial recall, there have been at least 21 reports of skull fractures to infants because of the Bumbo seats.
The company released a statement about the Bumbo seat, saying that it is going to add a restraining belt to increase the safety of the child sitting in it. The statement reads as follows:
“The restraint belt will help prevent children from getting out of or falling from the seat when it is used as intended: on the floor with adult supervision and never on raised surfaces. The health and safety of children using the Bumbo Baby Seat are our top priorities.”
The seats that have been recalled were sold at Walmart, Babies R Us, Target and multiple other retailers across the country between the dates of August 2003 to August 2012. Owners of the Bumbo seat are urged to call the company at 866-898-4999 to order a repair kit, which includes a restraining belt.
