A letter has been making its way around the internet that announces a ‘white graduates only’ after-party for a high school reunion. The class of 1973 from St. Martinville, Louisiana, Senior High School has been celebrating its class reunions segregated for nearly 40 years. The graduates in the class decided to hold a reunion this year that would not be segregated. But, a letter announcing an after-party said that it was for ‘white graduates only.’
The principal at the school, Michael Kreamer, said that he found the letter to be distressing. “I’m just a little disappointed that something like this comes up. I don’t think that it looks good for the school, but again as I said it has nothing to do with St. Martinville Senior High. So I hope people don’t take that the wrong way.”
There will be a reception in September at the school, which will be followed by the homecoming football game. The letter announcing the reunion says, “all graduates are welcome to attend” those specific events. Once the game is finished, “white graduates only” are invited to the home of a classmate. An organizer of the event, Liza Chance, said that she is confused with the invitation.
“This is just a start it’s a beginning, it needs to go forward. I don’t understand why this went the way it did,” she said.
