As part of a campaign that educates citizens on preparing for major disasters and zombies, the Department of Homeland Security said, “The zombies are coming!” The government, tongue in cheek, said that citizens should prepare for a zombie apocalypse so that if you are ready for a zombie attack then the preparations you took for that can be used for any other disaster such as a hurricane, a terrorist attack or an earthquake.
An online class was held for Citizen Corps Organization by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The seminar was for the sole purpose of better preparing emergency workers when it comes to planning for and preparing communities for disasters. Under the same pretenses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created a social media campaign in 2011.
Emergency personnel have been told to use the likeness of zombies to encourage their citizens to prepare for zombie and other types of disasters. Those who came up with the health campaign also said that they liked the idea because it was released so close to Halloween. The recommendations issued by the government include making sure people have an emergency evacuation plan in place along with extra clothes, medications, fresh water and flashlights on hand.
Quite a bit of the suggestions from the government came very close to matching the rules outlined for dealing with zombies in the 2009 movie “Zombieland.”
