FBI and Homeland Security Issue Warning of Violence in U.S.

As widespread violent protests in the Middle East continue, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have released a bulletin warning local law enforcement agencies that the violence could spread to the United States. The violence in the Middle East was sparked by a video made in the United States called ‘The Innocence of Muslims.’

The bulletin does not mention specific threats but it does warn first responders to be “aware of the potential for spontaneous large crowds and protests that could overwhelm resources.” First responders should also “be vigilant for possible efforts to encourage peaceful protesters to commit acts of violence. Additionally, we judge that violent extremist groups in the United States could exploit anger over the film to advance their recruitment efforts. Although there has been no violent reaction to the film in the Homeland thus far, the risk of violence could increase both at home and abroad as the film continues to gain attention. It is requested that faith-based organizations to promptly report suspicious activities that could indicate pre-operational plotting against Jewish, Coptic, Islamic, or any other faith-based communities.”

Extra security measures have been taken by moving the USS Laboon and the USS McFaul towards the coast of Libya. Close to 50 missions in the Middle East have been warned to be vigilant and have been given additional security.
