Fiona Apple, the Grammy-winning singer, was arrested on Wednesday at a border checkpoint in Texas on a felony drug possession charge. The arrest came after a search of her tour bus, and she spent the night in jail in Sierra Blanca.
The small west Texas town of Sierra Blanca has gained quite a reputation in nabbing celebrities, with previous occasions involving Arnie Hammer, the “Social Network” actor, singer Willie Nelson, and rapper Snoop Dogg – all being on drug charges.
According to the sheriff’s office in Hudspeth County, Fiona had 4 grams of hashish in her possession.
Even though there were seven other persons on her tour bus, Fiona owned up by claiming the drugs were hers, allowing the rest to drive on.
Rusty Fleming, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office in Hudspeth County, told the media that Fiona acted respectful and calm, though seeming concerned after learning that she would have to spend the night in jail.
Her bail was posted on Thursday and she was released without any further incident.
Apple was due to perform in Austin on Thursday night, but the show was postponed due to apparent reasons. She had won a Grammy from her 1996 debut album “Tidal” for the single “Criminal.”
The Interstate 10 highway that runs through and between California and Florida sees a regular flow of celebrities being apprehended. When County Judge Becky Dean-Walker was asked by the media as to how the town, which sits on interstate 10, manages to apprehend so many celebrities, she said, “Because they come through here with stuff they shouldn’t have.”
