Mick Jagger’s Love Letters Up for Auction

Mick Jagger’s love letters written to American singer Marsha Hunt would be up for auction next month. The letters mention his personal problems and discuss poetry and arts. Rolling Stones singer Jagger had his first child with Hunt. Hunt told Britain’s Guardian newspaper that she was selling the letters, as she was unable to pay her bills. Hunt, who lives in France, told the newspaper, “I’m broke.” The letters were written in July and August 1969.

According to the Guardian, the ten letters would be sold on December 12 by Sotheby’s. The letters were written while Jagger was filming the movie “Ned Kelly” based upon the infamous Robin Hood character of Australia. According to Guardian, Sotheby’s has valued the letters between $111,000 and $160,000.

Jagger’s relationship with Hunt, who is African-American, was kept secret until 1972. The letters depict emotions of the young Jagger, who wrote about meeting author Christopher Isherwood, an unrealized multimedia project, and about the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

Allegedly, Hunt was the inspiration for the Rolling Stone’s song “Brown Sugar” that Jagger wrote while in Australia. The letters being put on sale also describes Jagger’s breakdown of relationships with singer Marianne Faithful, and the loss he felt at the death of guitarist Brian Jones.

Hunt told the Guardian “The sale is important” because, “Someone, I hope, will buy those letters as our generation is dying and with us will go the reality of who we were and what life was.”
