The suspect in the St. Vincent Hospital shooting that occurred this past weekend has been identified by police officers. The shooting occurred early on Saturday morning. The suspect has been identified as Jason Letts, 38, from Jemison.
According to Sgt. Johnny Williams said that Letts entered the hospital with a gun and was fatally wounded by police officers at the scene. The shooting took place on the fifth floor of the hospital right around 4 a.m.
Two hospital employees and one police officer was shot by Letts as they were exiting an elevator. The gunman was shot and killed by a second officer who came from around the corner. The injuries suffered by the officer and the hospital employees have been deemed not life-threatening, according to Williams. The names of the victims have not been released.
Police have not released any information as to what Letts was doing prior to opening fire in the hospital and are hoping that surveillance videos from the fifth floor will help them understand what happened prior to the shooting. A spokeswoman from the hospital told the media that employees are trained to handle such incidents. During the shooting a “Code Silver” was announced throughout the building. This code lets everyone know that there is threat or harm with a weapon happening in the building.
