A longtime friend of the Lanza family told Fox News recently that Nancy Lanza was in the middle of having her son, Adam, committed to a psychiatric facility when he attacked Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut last Friday.
One possible motive for the shooting being investigated is Lanza’s anger towards his mother’s plan to have him committed, according to a senior law enforcement officials.
“From what I’ve been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed,” said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up close to the school. “Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off.”
It is not known if Nancy actually filed the paperwork, because court officials have said that thsoe type of records are sealed. Nancy would have had to go through a longer process to obtain legal rights to commit an adult to a psychiatric facility or a hospital against his will.
A report in the New York Daily News said that an unidentified friend made claims that Adam was withdrawn from his mother, and the world, prior to the shooting. The unidentified friend of Nancy said that she took Adam to a psychiatrist, but had not planned to commit her son.
It has been reported that Nancy was a volunteer with kindergartners at Sandy Hook for a couple of years. Flashman noted that Adam “believed she cared more for the children than she did for him.” Nancy was the first victim in the massacre, as she was shot while asleep in her bed. Flashman also told Fox News that Nancy was friends with the Sandy Hook principal and the psychologist. Both women were killed during the shooting at the school.
