On Thursday, a republican from Nevada who was arrested for voter fraud during the 2012 election, pled guilty and accepted a deal. When she was arrested she claimed she was testing the integrity of the system as she tried to vote twice. She will have to pay a fine of $2,500 and promise to keep out of trouble.
The woman is Roxanne Rubin, 56, who works at a casino on the Las Vegas Strip. She was arrested November 3, 2012 after she attempted to vote two times. She voted once at her polling place in Henderson and then tried a second time at a place in Las Vegas. Workers at the second site said she voted already, but Rubin claimed she did not and insisted that she be able to vote. The poll workers at the second site would not permit her to vote.
She claimed she was trying to prove how easy it is to commit voter fraud using a signature. “This has always been an issue with me. I just feel the system is flawed,” Rubin said to the Associated Press. “If we’re showing ID for everything else, why wouldn’t we show our ID in order to vote?”
Rubin said that threats of voter fraud is the reason why voter ID laws have to be put in place. There is no voter ID law in Nevada, except for first-time voters who did not provide an ID when they registered to vote.
Ross Miller, the Nevada Secretary of State, said, “If Ms. Rubin was trying to demonstrate how easy it is to commit voter fraud, she clearly failed and proved just the opposite.”
By accepting the plea deal, Rubin must pay $2,481 to the state of Nevada as restitution. She is also required to complete 100 hours of community service. She has to keep herself out of trouble and complete an impulse control course.
