On Thursday morning, police officers discovered the body that matches the description of the shooting suspect who killed one person and wounded two more at a Phoenix office building, according to The Arizona Republic. Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said that the man died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspected vehicle of the shooter, a rented Kia Optima, was also found nearby.
The suspect is 70-year-old Arthur Douglas Harmon. Harmon was last seen leaving the office building around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Witnesses said that Harmon fired one shot at a witness who was chasing him. Police believe that Harmon targeted two men and then shot a bystander after a pre-litigation meeting at the office complex.
The victims have been identified as Steven D. Singer, 48, a chief executive officer at a call center; Mark Hummels, 43, a lawyer who represented Singer; and Nichole Hampton, 32, a bystander who was taking pictures for business purposes.
Singer is the defendant in a lawsuit Harmon filed regarding furniture that Reback Design, Harmon’s company, had refurbished. Singer passed away from his injuries. Hummels was Singer’s lawyer and suffered serious back and neck wounds. Doctors are hopeful about his recovery. Hampton was already outside taking pictures for business purposes and was caught in the gunfire near the entrance. She was wounded in her hand.
The office is located on the 7310 block of North 16th Street. Close to one dozen companies call the building home, where hundreds of workers locked their doors and hid away from windows.
“I looked out the window, in the back, and there were two bodies laying on the ground,” said Rob Hayter, who works for a title company in the complex.
Sgt. Tommy Thompson, from the Phoenix Police Department, noted that Harmon targeted the two men.
Harmon, Hummels, and Singer were at a mediation proceeding Wednesday monring at the law office of DeConcini, McDonald, Yetwin & Lacy. The managing partner of the firm, Lisa Anne Davis, said that a lawyer from the firm presided over the meeting as a court-appointed judge pro tem.
During the meeting, Harmon said he had to go to his car. After a period of time, Hummels and Singer figured Harmon was not coming back. They went downstairs to leave, which is when they were shot.
A friend of the Singer family, Jennifer Manning, said, “It was like a love story. They loved each other so much. … It just hit so hard. There’s shooting every day, and you don’t expect it to be someone you know. He was such a wonderful man. He really, truthfully was.”
