The White Student Union, a racist group at Towson University, has announced that it will begin its own police patrols on campus at night, according to ThinkProgress. The group was founded last year and has been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The founder of the group, Matthew Heimbach and another member, Scott Terry, interrupted a minority panel at the Conservative Political Action Conference earlier this month. They defended slavery and made other racist comments.
In response to the media reports of the exchange at the event, Heimbach said the following:
“The conversation was much longer,†he said. “Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like anyone got the whole thing. The main discussion was based on the fact that we as Republicans could be Booker T. Washington Republicans. What that means is we can have different cultural values, but there’s no reason we need this multicultural society. As Republicans we can be united in traditional values, it doesn’t mean we need to force this political mindset on anyone.â€
According to Towson’s newspaper, The Towerlight, Heimbach said, “One thing we’re doing at night is to have a male member accompany female members across campus or to night classes,†Heimbach said. “Not because we’re terrified, but in college everyone is focused on themselves. We just want to make campus a better place. If we see a white person commit a crime against a person who is not white, we’re going to assist the person who was attacked every time.â€
The members of the group will carry flashlights and conduct campus safety walks. Female members will carry pepper spray to protect others from sexual assaults and robberies.
Last month, the White Student Union wrote the following in a blog post called “Black Crime Wave Continues!”
“The frequent robberies, sexual assaults, and acts of vandalism at Towson University are not often reported in the local media. For those who are not Towson students it seems hard to fathom that every single day black predators prey upon the majority white Towson University student body. White Southern men have long been called to defend their communities when law enforcement and the State seem unwilling to protect our people. The WSU executive board has unanimously approved to make it mandatory for all female WSU members to begin taking some form of unarmed self defense training over the next month.â€
Heimbach said that none of the group’s members will be carrying weapons during their nighttime patrols of the campus.
