Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the two suspects believed to have masterminded the Bombing of the Boston Marathon, was arrested on Friday evening after a day long-manhunt that shut down the city and saw several lose their lives. One of those lives lost was that of Tsarnaev’s brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the second suspect, who was killed in a police shootout. Dzhokhar was shot twice as well, and is currently recovering at a Boston hospital as police begin to question him.
The pursuit of the Tsarnaev brothers, who are believed to have been responsible for the bombs set off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon last Monday that killed three people and injured 107, was drenched in violence and left the city’s population in fear. Once the brothers were identified as suspects in the bombing, they were spotted on surveillance footage of a convenience store that had been robbed. The Tsarnaev brothers are then believed to have murdered Sean Collier, a campus police officer at MIT, before leading a chase throughout the streets of Boston.
When police first caught up with the brothers, the incident turned into a shootout during which Tamerlan was shot several times and died in police custody. He was found wearing an explosive device.
Dzhokhar escaped from the shootout, and was believed to be armed and extremely dangerous. The search for the suspect essentially shut Boston down on Friday, as police advised residents to stay in their homes and suspended cab service and public transit. Police searched the entirety of the city, and even expanded the hunt to neighboring states, but the focus of the pursuit was in Boston’s Watertown neighborhood, where police eventually discovered Tsarnaev, injured and hiding in a small, docked boat.
Tsarnaev was discovered in serious condition, and was rushed to the intensive care unit of Beth Israel Deaconess, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to his leg and mouth, with an exit wound at the back of his neck. According to the Huffington Post, an unidentified FBI source suspects that Tsarnaev’s wound in his mouth may have been related to a failed suicide attempt.
Tsarnaev was too injured to speak with investigators over the weekend, but on Monday morning it was reported that he is now responsive and answering questions by writing on a sheet of paper in his hospital bed. Authorities have not released any statements indicating what questions are being asked or how Tsarnaev has responded to these questions.
