In less surprising news, a hitchhiker who gained notoriety for stopping a crime in progress by bludgeoning the perpetrator with a hatchet several times was arrested yesterday for the murder of a 73-year old New Jersey attorney who was bludgeoned to death. Caleb “Kai” McGillvary, aka Kai Lawrence aka Kai Nicodemus aka Caleb Kai Yodhehwawheh achieved internet fame for his heroic efforts to stop a man from injuring more people in Fresno, CA earlier this year, but now finds himself the primary suspect in the murder of Joseph Galfy, who was found dead in his home from blunt force trauma on Monday.
McGillvary, 24, is a homeless man who has been hitchhiking across the United States over the last year. He initially achieved fame when, after being picked up by a driver in Central California, the driver drove his car into a construction worker, got out of the car and further assaulted the man he had hit, then attacked a female bystander. McGillvary intervened by hitting the attacker with the handle of a hatchet he carried in his backpack, incapacitating the attacker and earning the moniker “Hatchet Hitchhiker.”
Since his act of heroism, McGillvary has continued to hitchhike across the country, in what he described as a tour to meet fans.
It is believed that Galfy picked McGillvary up from New York City’s Time Square, and brought McGillvary back to his home. It is believed McGillvary stayed at Galfy’s home for several days before continuing his journey.
Gawker reports that the day after Galfy was found dead in his home, a Facebook post from a user named “Caleb Kai Yodhehwawheh” believed to be McGillvary, which claimed he had been sexually abused. The post, which is not fit for publication, suggests that McGillvary woke up in a stranger’s house with sexual fluid on his face and suffering from the after effects of date-rape drugs. “what would you do?” asks the post.
Galfy was found to have been killed by blunt force trauma, which suggests the weapon McGillvary is known for using, his synonymous hatchet.
A warrant was issued for McGillvary’s arrest on Monday for the murder, and McGillvary was arrested on Tuesday at a Philadelphia bus station. He was transferred back to Clark, New Jersey, where he is being held on $3 million bail.
“I believe that everyone is a little safer with this person off the streets,” said Union County Prosecutor Theodore Romankow.
