The Thomas M. Cooley Law School will soon merge with Western Michigan University. At this point, Western’s Board of Trustees have only approved a formal alliance, according to Lansing State Journal.com. This preliminary step will begin the formal process and allow the Cooley Law School to take Western’s name. One of the next steps will be taken by the accrediting agencies of both schools, as various documentation passes between the two institutions.

Western’s President Dunn has commented on the situation. He discusses the new agreement as an evolution of the university. Its continued growth is proven even as a new medical school will open up next year. The new Cooley addition will make Western Michigan University one of the few universities to have a law school.

Officials from the Thomas. M. Cooley School of Law have commented that the current step is indicative of a fruitful relationship. The plans moving forward include dual degree programs and a shared space in Grand Rapids. A Cooley Law School spokesman said there are no plans to change the name of the law school in downtown Lansing.

Western Michigan University is a public University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, that was established in 1903. It has one of the largest aviation programs in the country. The University’s athletes compete in division one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The University has a student body of twenty thousand undergraduates and five thousand postgraduate students.

The Thomas M. Cooley Law School is a private institution known as one of the largest American law schools. Its main campus is in Lansing, Michigan, while its other campuses are in Grand Rapids, Auburn Hills, Ann Arbor and Tampa, Florida. It’s student body has almost 550 full time law students as well as over 3 thousand part time students. The Cooley law school has the largest law school faculty, the largest minority enrollment, and the largest foreign national enrollment in the nation.
