These are dark times for Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice and her husband, Joe, who were indicted Monday on federal fraud charges. The couple has been hit with charges they they’ve defrauded lenders during bankruptcy proceedings, gaining them about $4.6 million in mortgages, withdrawals from home equity lines of credit, and construction loans, among other charges. If convicted, they could face up to 30 years in prison, and Joe, meanwhile, a citizen of Italy, could be deported.

The couple made no pleas to the 39 indictments brought against them, but Teresa’s attorney say she will plead not guilty at their arraignment hearing on Aug. 14, 2013. E! News has said that “she’s shockingly calm about this,” and the couple “have been tighter than ever. They’ve been together constantly, and, sadly, their relationship seemed very strong before this news hit.”

Teresa and Joe said nothing to the press regarding the charges, and Bravo, which airs their show, has also made no comment on the indictment.

“Today is a most difficult day for our family,” Giudice tweeted Monday. “I support Joe and, as a wonderful husband and father, I know he wants only the best for our lovely daughters and me. I am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career. As a result, I am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the Government as quickly as possible. Thank you all for your kind wishes, prayers and support.”
