RIP Delbert Bellon. He survived WWII, was wounded in action in Okinawa, but at the age of 88 couldn’t survive the beating two teenagers gave him outside his home. Two African American teenagers were sought by the Spoken police in connection with the murder.
Spokane Police Major Crimes Detective Lieutenant Mark Griffins indicated it couldn’t have been a hate crime. “It does appear random,” he told the media.
According to witnesses Belton was in the parking lot of Eagles Lodge at 6410 N at around 8 p.m., when the two male teenagers attacked the lone old man, as he was about to head inside to play pool.
They beat him up and left him for dead – Delbert Belton died next day, this Thursday.
Police was unable to arrest anyone despite using police dogs, though the Spokane Police Department has released photos of one of the suspects captured in a surveillance camera.
Griffins told KXLY-TV, “He was in the parking lot, it appears he was assaulted in the parking lot and there was no indication that he would have known these people prior to the assault.”
Spoken Police say the suspects are between 16 and 19 years of age. One of the suspects was wearing all black clothing, and the other was about 6 feet tall.
It seems kind of sad to think that when Delbert was of the age of those who killed him, he was fighting for the US in Okinawa and getting shot in his leg.
He was a member of the Eagle Lodge and liked to play pool. He was called “Shorty” by friends and described as one of the nicest persons you could have ever met.
The last update on the story has come from KHQ-TV, which has reported that one of the teenagers suspected in the death of Delbert Belton has been arrested and taken into custody.
