Aaryn Gries was evicted from ‘Big Brother’ on Thursday night. While she was leaving, she told Julie Chen, who was exit interviewing her, that she isn’t a racist, but just a misunderstood Texan. On the show ‘Big Brother’ Gries made fun of Asians, black people, and even called a gay man “queer.” Big personalities are definitely commended on the reality competition show, but being mean is hardly a quality that will win fans.

Aaryn commented that she didn’t mean to come off as racist. She explained, “In Texas, we say things. Sometimes we joke and we don’t mean it. I feel how bad it is being seen and how I’ve come across to people. I don’t want to seem like that person.” It’s very easy to fall into the habit of saying something which on the surface has very little meaning to the speaker, but which could hurt another person. Aaryn says she did not mean to say racist comments, and this is exactly the case of someone just saying mean things without thinking or really internalizing how much pain it could cause another person. Aaryn said she apologized for offending people, that she didn’t mean the things she said to be taken seriously. She also says she feels horrible about it and regrets it.

The exit interviewer then read back to Aaryn some of the meaner things she said. Aaryn has been dropped by her modeling agency over her behavior, but isn’t aware of it, as she has no knowledge of and is allowed no interaction with the outside world until the show finishes this September. When the show finishes, she will quickly learn the consequences of being so mean to others. Hopefully she will take that as a lesson to be a nicer person.
