Yesterday’s shooting in Washington D.C. seems to be the work of one man, Aaron Alexis, 34, and though there is no known motive for his attack, which killed 12 people and injured others, authorities have decided that additional suspects were not involved.
Aaron Alexis was working as a contractor for the military, and thus had a pass to get into the Naval Sea Systems Command Headquarters, which is stationed uncomfortably close to the nation’s capital. He entered at 8:20 a.m. and shot at workers there, killing 12, all of which were civilians and contractors, and none of which were military, as they had breakfast.
Because the shooting happened in the nation’s capital, and not so far from the White House, much of D.C. went under lockdown until the situation was figured out.
Alexis drove a rental car and shot an officer and another person outside Building 197. Once he made is way the floor overlooking the atrium he took fire at employees below.
“He was shooting down from above,” said a law enforcement official. “That is where he does most of his damage.”
Though it is unclear what Alexis’ motive was for the shooting, authorities suspect mental illness was involved, with Lt. William Fitzgerald reporting that Alexis had reported hearing strong voices and believed people were keeping him awake using microwave vibrations. He reported “voices speaking to him through the wall, flooring, and ceiling,” Lt. Fitzgerald said.
It is still unclear if this was part of the reason why he made the attack. Alexis himself was killed during return fire during the attack, so he cannot give direct answers as to his motive.
