On Monday, Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP, announced that it had hired Tram N. Nguyen as a partner in the Private Funds Practice Group of the law firm. Ms. Nguyen will be a resident partner at the law firm’s DC office. She joins the law firm from the Securities and Exchange Commission where she was Chief of the Private Funds branch of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management.
During her tenure at the SEC, Ms. Nguyen had led rulemaking initiatives that affected private fund advisers and also played a significant role in implementing the Dodd-Frank Act, the Volcker rule provisions that affect the ability of banks to sponsor and invest in hedge funds, and the crafting of the exemptions of venture capital from registration under specified circumstances.
Ms. Nguyen also worked on implementation of the rules of additional reporting by private fund advisers, while at the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Stressing the importance of Nguyen joining the law firm, Stuart Coleman, Stroock’s co-managing partner and Chairperson of the firm’s Investment Management Practice Group said, “Her insight into the current regulatory climate and experience in both private practice and government makes her a tremendous addition to our firm overall, and particularly to our expanding presence in Washington DC.”
Before joining the SEC, Ms. Nguyen had been in private law practice for more than a decade. She had worked for international law firms in New York City, Washington and the District of Columbia. During her private practice, she had mostly focused on hedge funds and private equity funds, and on advising clients on fund related issues.
After she became well-known as a national expert on private fund regulations, the SEC tapped her to join as an industry expert and help in the implementation of private fund provisions in the Dodd-Frank Act.
