Leslie Caldwell was nominated today to serve as assistant attorney general for the criminal division in the U.S. Department of Justice. She is a former Morgan, Lewis & Bockius partner and former white collar defense lawyer.
Caldwell fills Lanny Breuer’s position, as Breuer “left the Justice department this year to rejoin Covington & Burling” as the vice-chairman of the firm. Leslie Caldwell was a partner at Morgan Lewis since 2004, according to the Legal Times. She spent 5 years as the co-chair of the firm’s white collar practice. Early on in her career she also gained a lot of experience as a federal prosecutor, serving in the U.S. attorney’s officers in the Northern District of California and in the Eastern District of New York. Caldwell’s clients in her white-collar work have included giants such as Oracle Corp. Fannie Mae. And Hewlett-Packard.
Leslie also served as director of the Justice Department’s Enron Task Force from 2002 to 2004. As the head of the Enron Task Force she managed auditors and led the department’s investigation into Enron and its finances as it giant had collapsed. She also led the prosecution of former company officials. A member of the team that she had led there includes current White House counsel, Kathryn Ruemmler. Caldwell did not comment and Morgan Lewis’s spokeswoman declined to comment.
