Actor Michael Douglas and his ex-wife are finally agreeing on something. They are fighting tooth and nail over what TMZ calls the “barbaric treatment of their imprisoned son.” Cameron is in solitary confinement in Maryland’s Cumberland Federal Prison. He is currently serving ten years for heroin possession and conspiracy to distribute narcotics. He has admitted to having his girlfriend sneak drugs in to him in prison and failed a drug test while behind bars.
Diandra De Morrel Douglas commented that her son was treated like an animal, and that Cameron “couldn’t walk in the daylight because his skin would burn because it couldn’t adapt after living in an underground hole for so long. And his hair is falling out.” Skin burning and itching, and not being able to walk straight somewhat sound like the effects of heroin addiction or withdrawal symptoms.
Though Michael Douglas was in court again and again trying to lighten the time his son spent in prison, Cameron Douglas received the stiffest sentence recorded when he got 4 and a half years extra time in prison for being caught with drugs in prison. That was added to the five year sentence Cameron was already serving.
The court of appeals noted that after Cameron was given leniency in return for cooperating against his former heroin suppliers, he got half the normal sentencing. But though Cameron got a chance, he had a girlfriend sneak him drugs, and he also had a lawyer sneak him drugs in prison. The judge was angry that the young man was given a chance and had wasted it. Michael Douglas’s son is accused if getting a break and having screwed it up, and of just being an addict plain and simple.
Attorney Paul Schectman was defending Cameron Douglas and commented, “54 months is an unreasonable sentence.” He did not suggest however, that his client should not have been punished at all.
