Being a celebrity means people listen to your opinions, though you have don’t necessarily have any justification that your opinions are relevant (such as education or experience). Celebrity status means you are immediately interesting as a person just because you can pretend to be another person. Yet James Woods is seeking to use his celebrity status, gained from such movies as “the Virgin Suicides,” “One Upon a Time in America,” and “White House Down,” to trash president Obama, making a pun on “Obama Nation” and calling him “a true abomination.”
Among the things he has said regarding the president, on his Tweeter platform, are that though Obama was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, “Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin were both Nobel Peace Prize Nominees.”
More to the point on the abomination comment, he went on to say “…To have barricaded the WW2 vets, but allow illegal aliens privilege [makes him abominable].” He specifically railed against the president for the government shutdown, placing special onus on him, and also, at one point, called him “just vile. A small, small man.”
When one concerned Twitter user asked, “Dude, aren’t u worried about … u know .. ever working again??” he responded “I don’t expect to work again. I think Barack Obama is a threat to the integrity and future of the Republic. My country first.”
So, in effect, he is deliberately sacrificing his acting career to voice his political opinions. Whether that is noble or silly depends to do so, perhaps, on your perspective.
Other things he’s said include, “Sixteen tears of machine Democrats shredding the fabric of this Republic will toss the greatest democracy on the trash heap of world history,” and “Might be slightly difficult for you if those of us who didn’t vote for Obama all left. Who would pay for all your stuff?”
While a man may be both a respectable actor and an interesting political commentator, Twitter isn’t the forum for doing much more than embarrassing yourself and others, and seems quite the temptation for many celebrities to write impulsive opinions and reactions.
