Students at Wayne County Public School heard there was a masked and armed criminal running rampant with a handgun in their school on Friday. Soon enough, they were told it was a school lesson. Parents promptly freaked out at the tactless school exercise and want answers. The school sent home a letter where school officials told parents that they wanted to teach kids to be aware of what’s going on around them, and to be aware of their immediate surroundings. Relative to the amount of gun violence in schools over the past few years, teachers probably had a good motive in mind, but, according to ABC, as a school employee dressed up in a ski mask and carrying a fake gun pretending to be a criminal- parents didn’t take this lightly.
The Eastern Wayne Middle School officials are now trying to cover their tracks as they admit that “they should have been more sensitive.” Students were terrified and parents weren’t happy with the situation at all. Public Information Officer with Wayne County Public Schools commented on the situation. “It obviously did lack that sensitivity that was needed …all of our schools work very hard to promote a safe learning environment…in this situation, the exercise in its original intent was appropriate, but in how it was executed it obviously lacked judgment.”
Parents called the school system concerned about the situation. An investigation is going on currently and the employee dressed in the ski mask could be facing disciplinary action.
