The “Subway Vigilante” of 1984 is the small-time drug dealer of today. Bernie Goetz, 65, who had his moment of fame back in the 80’s when he shot a group of four black teens on the No. 2 train, to stop what he took to be a mugging, in a case that made the front page headlines and divided the nation over racial lines, has resorted to, as of late, selling dimebags in the park.
Or at least this appears to be the case after Goetz was arrested for selling marijuana to an undercover cop. Friday evening he approached the young woman and asked if she wanted to get high. Though the cops were not specifically targeting Goetz, merely hitting a high traffic area, they soon placed an arrest over the former public figure after the two had a conversation and Goetz went back to his apartment to get $30 worth of Marijuana to complete the sale. Instead, he was arrested and put into cuffs, charged with the criminal sale of marijuana.
All this went down at about 5:30 p.m. at Union Square Park Friday night.
Though Goetz was acquitted of murder charges, he had to pay after he lost a civil suit against one of the youths he shot and crippled, having to declare bankruptcy after the case awarded $43 million in damages.
“Maybe his small crew of bigots and yahoos will come out to support him,” said Ron Kuby, attorney of the man crippled by Goetz’s gun.
