For most people celebrating Thanksgiving, it’s all about the turkey – a huge, tender and juicy turkey. The Butterball brand is the most popular this time of year, according to The Huffington Post, but the demands for their sixteen pound birds outnumber their supplies. Butterball is responsible for twenty percent of United States’s turkeys and 1.3 billion pounds of turkey meat per year. However, the actual turkeys haven’t been able to gain weight making for smaller birds this year. The shortage of sizable turkeys is nationwide. Sixteen pounds is the average weight of the Thanksgiving bird consumed during the holiday, but according to turkey farmers the high demand birds aren’t growing as fast as they used to. One can have creamy gravy and endless stuffing, but without the turkey Thanksgiving may be a disappointment for most American families. Usually the size of turkeys increases from year to year, but this is the first time there’s been a significant decrease. The Butterball company has not commented on the reasons for the size reduction of their birds, but they have said, “While we are continuing to evaluate all potential causes, we are working to remedy the issue.” The size issue does not affect frozen turkeys (only fresh) or other brands. Some advice – maybe go and enjoy a turkey dinner at a restaurant. Remember to buy two turkeys if you plan on serving one at Christmas dinner. Also, invite friends and family to help by bringing in some homemade dishes of their own and remember, “It’s Turkey Day!”
