Edward Snowden said during an interview online Monday night, that his “mission’s already accomplished” and that he was satisfied with stories being written about the government collecting internet and phone records that has dramatically increased sine the September 11th, 2001 attacks on the United States.
“As soon as the journalists were able to work, everything that I had been trying to do was validated,” according to the Post. “Because, remember, I didn’t want to change society. I wanted to give society a chance to determine if it should change itself.”
On Friday President Obama said he would see to changes in the NSA’s bulk collection of American’s phone records and the concerns of the public’s privacy. A federal judge declared the collection program unconstitutional. There are 46 changes to the NSA operations suggested by the Presidential advisory panel.
The Justice Department unsealed a complaint against Snowden’s espionage and felony theft of government property in June. He has temporary asylum in Russia for the past five months. United States allies are upset over reports that the U.S. are monitoring their leaders’ cellphone calls. Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are trying to find ways of blocking the government’s collection of data.
“I am not trying to bring down the NSA, I am working to improve the NSA,” Snowden said. “I am still working for the NSA right now. They are the only ones who don’t realize it.” Caitlin Hayden a White House spokeswoman said “Mr. Snowden faces felony charges here in the United States and should be returned to the U.S. as soon as possible, where he will be afforded due process and all the protections of our criminal justice system.”
