The Seven time world champion Formula One racer Michael Schumacher is now in critical condition. He is in a medically induced coma as doctors perform brain surgery on him. In a terrible crash-accident sustained -not while driving at close to speeds of 200mph but rather while skiing in the French Alps, Schumacher “suffered contusions to the brain as well as hemorrhaging when he crashed,” according to Bloomberg.
His surgeon, Stephan Chabardes commented, “We assess his situation as extremely grave.” The head of the anesthesia department commented that it was not possible to give a prognosis at this time. “We can say he is fighting for his life. We judge him to be in a very serious situation. We cannot tell what the outcome will be yet.”
When the accident occurred, Michael Schumacher was wearing a helmet; the surgeons now realized that without that helmet, he would have been dead relative to the “violence of the shock.” What had exactly happened was that the star race car driver hit his head on a rock while skiing on ungroomed slopes. He was with his 14 year old son. Fans around the world are praying for his recovery. His family is grateful for the support they’ve received but they also ask for their privacy in this time. Friends and supporters around the world tweet, post, and blog, “Let us pray for Michael for a full and speedy recovery!”
