A concussion is frequently defined as a head injury with a temporary loss of brain function. A concussion also causes a variety of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms, which may not be recognized if subtle. The treatment involves monitoring as well as physical and cognitive rest such as the reduction of such activities as school work, playing video games and text messaging. The common causes include sports injuries, bicycle accidents, car accidents, and falls, the latter two being the most frequent among most adults.
Former players in The National Football League have brought claims against the NFL over concussion related injuries. After negotiating final terms of the deal for more than four months, according to Bloomberg News, lawyers for retired players filed the 149-page settlement agreement. Lawyers for the players said that the settlement covers all of the league’s more than 18,000 living retired players regardless of whether they’ve filed a lawsuit over concussion-related injuries or not. The National Football League could spend over $914 million to settle these claims.
“This is an extraordinary settlement for retired NFL players and their families,” Chris Seeger and Sol Weiss, the co-lead attorneys for the retired players, wrote in an e-mailed statement.
According to the terms of the settlement, compensation will be based on a list of qualified injuries included in the court filings. They are neurocognitive impairment resulting in memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease and death from a progressive disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.
