The Dallas Business Journal has released data that shows the law firm of Haynes and Boone, from North Texas, has the most women and most minority attorneys.
The firm is also the largest overall from North Texas since it employs 228 local attorneys. Of those 228, 82 are female and 42 are racial or ethnic minority attorneys. This equates to 36 percent women and 18 percent minorities in the ranks of its lawyers.
In Dallas County, the ratio is 33 percent female and 14 percent minority attorneys. Across the state, the ratio is 33 percent female and 18 percent minority attorneys, according to the State Bar of Texas.
“Statistics have shown that a diverse team produces a better product,” Felicity Fowler said. Fowler is a partner at Haynes and Boone. She is also the co-chair of the Attorney Diversity Committee at the firm. “We want our firm to reflect Dallas.”
In a study from the Diversity Task Force, Haynes and Boone ranked as the fourth most diverse firm in Dallas. The study accounted for minority advancement and ownership along with head count. The firms that ranked higher include Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP
The study looked at 20 law firms, for a total of 799 equity partners. Of those 799 equity partners, only 48 of them are minorities. This is good for six percent. The African-American, Hispanic and Asian bar associations of Dallas released data that shows only one percent of the 799 equity partners at the largest firms in Dallas are African-American.
“All of us are working to make the profession more inclusive,” Fowler said. “It’s frustrating. Getting that number up is something we’re all dealing with, because it should be up for all law firms.”
The five largest firms in North Texas ranked as follows by the DBJ survey:
– Haynes and Boone LLP with 36 percent women and 18 percent minority
– Thompson & Knight LLP with 16 percent women and 9 percent minority
– Locke Lord LLP
– Jackson Walker LLP with 26 percent women and 12 percent minority
– Winstead PC with 30 percent women and 11 percent minority
